Hot Button Abortion Issues

Abortion issues have been a hot button topic for many years not. The pro choice versus pro life debate in an ongoing one as politicians muse over legislation that may have an impact over the legality of this issue. The Supreme Court’s landmark Roe versus Wade decision in the early 1970s has made a huge impact in this important issue. The Court’s decision that put the all decisions regarding a woman’s health in the hands of her and her doctor effectively made termination legal for the first two trimesters of a woman’s pregnancy. In recent years, the Bush Administration oversaw and effectively passed into law a bill outlawing terminations performed during the third trimester of the gestation of the pregnancy. This law, known as the Partial Birth Abortion Ban of 2003, has rejuvenated the ongoing issue regarding termination.

Furthermore, the debate over these issues extends into political, moral, and religious views. Many religions have come out with blanket statements regarding their feelings on termination. The Catholic Church has become an outspoken spokesperson against terminations, feeling that ending a pregnancy is effectively ending a child’s life. This termination goes directly against the doctrines and dogma of the Church and the teachings of Christianity. Other religions have also taken a stance on the topic of abortion, with more coming out against the issue. Of course, many religious affiliations have begun to modernize their philosophies and have begun to accept terminations and those individuals who choose abortion as an option for an unwanted pregnancy. Instead of pushing individuals away, these religious institutions have decided to draw in individuals who are seeking or have received terminations and working to provide emotional support for those women.

One major factor in this issues debate is the discussion regarding adoption. Many individuals who are against termination do not work to better the situations around adoption, which is usually the last option for individuals who do not terminate an unwanted pregnancy. Additionally, many individuals feel there should be more attention and funding directed towards adoption agencies and organizations instead of toward the overall topic of termination. These issues have been discussed for many years and will probably be around for many more.
