There are 3 different types of acne scars:
What is an acne scar?
For people afflicted with an acne scar, it is not a happy situation. You got rid of your pimples only to be left with a constant reminder of your condition. But what you may not know is that not every scar is the same.
Before going into too many details about scarring, there are some facts that you might want to know:
* 30% of people with moderate to severe conditions will get a scar
* A true scar never actually disappears
* Most scars will improve with treatments
The last fact is important. Scars will not significantly improve by themselves. That does not mean that there is no hope if you have a scar. The amount of improvement and treatment depends on what type of scar you have.
There are 3 different types of scars:
1. Icepick scar. This is a narrow and sharp scar. It is usually 2mm or less in width.
2. Boxcar scar. These a circular scars with vertical edges.
3. Rolling scar. This scar forms due to the tethering of normal skin to the subcutaneous tissue underneath.
All 3 types of scars can be improved with treatment. But each of them requires a different kind of treatment. So, knowing the kind of acne scar you have will help you to better determine which treatment is best for you.
But before getting to the point of scarring, the best thing to do is get early treatment for your condition. If treated early enough, you may never have to experience scarring.
One last thing to note is that you should not confuse the red mark left on the skin after a lesion is healed with a scar. The red mark is natural in the course of the skin healing itself. It will go away within 12 months. If it does not go away after 12 months, then most likely it is scarring and you should seek treatment accordingly.
