Nicotine Addiction
Since 1912 there have been assumptions that nicotine may be the cause of lung cancer. However, back then technology and science was not nearly as sophisticated as it is today. Nevertheless, with all of the information available today regarding the affects of nicotine and second hand smoke on the human body, individuals still choose to smoke. In fact, as smokers we are paying physical dollars daily for an early death. As ridiculous as this may sound, there are several logical reasons why someone will continue smoking knowing the damages it may cause.
Cigarettes are highly addictive causing one to suffer from nicotine related illnesses. Some may argue that nicotine is as bad or or worse than cocaine or other harmful illegal drugs. However, with the facts on the table, nicotine is still legal. According to researchers, hormones are released from nicotine that affects some receptors in the brain. Nicotine use results in more efficient processing of information and reduction of fatigue. In addition to these affects, nicotine is also known to have a sedative action, which is said to reduce anxiety, and induces euphoria. Nicotine effects are related to absolute blood levels and to the rate of increase in drug concentration at receptors.
As shocking as this sound, even more shocking is that nicotine accounts for 80% or more of deaths as a result of lung cancer. Since 1964, the release of the Surgeon Generals first report over 10 million people in the United States have died due to Nicotine or the association of nicotine.
Studies have shown that in the United States the smoking rate is higher among blacks than whites and is steadily increasing in Hispanics.
