Sexual Addiction The Harmful Result of a Greedy Sexual Appetite

Sexual addiction is a problem in American society that is gaining increased amounts of attention. Often occurrences of sexual obssession appear with people of high regard, which increases the shock factor of sexual obssession.

Research has shown that neuro-chemical changes occur in people with a sexual obssession when they have sex. These changes are what the person is truly addicted to. In addition, a person with uses sex as a means of comfort from pain and to relieve stress.

Further research has shown that approximately 8% of men and 3% of women in the United States suffer from a sexual obssessions. In all, this amounts to over 15 million people in the United States.

Most people share common characteristics. One characteristic is feelings of shame. A person with a sexual addiction often feels ashamed for what he has done after he has had sex. Often, the person will then justify what he has done in order to recover from the shame. For example, a married woman with a sexual obssession who has cheated on her husband might rationalize what she did by telling herself that her husband deserved it because he doesn’t spend enough time with her. The married woman then might go home and have sex with her husband in order to replace her feelings of shame with new feelings of pleasure.

Many people also engage in secretive sex. Many times, a person leads a dual life – one life is that of a respected, admired individual that is seen in the public eye, the other life being of a person who engages in sex acts that might be shocking to others. A person also often engages in abusive sex. This abusive sex can be in the form of the person with a sexual ossession coercing others to have sex with him. Or, it can be in the form of sexual harassment in the workplace when a coworker with a sexual obssession “accidentally” exposes body parts to other coworkers. It can cause a great deal of harm to the person as well as to the people around him. Therefore, it is important for a person to receive help in order to recover.
