Coping with depression
Depression may range from the very mild, moderate, to severe, depending upon the symptoms associated with each condition and the extent the condition and how interferes with our everyday functioning. The milder cases are usually brief in duration and may have little effect on our everyday activities. This is a complicated illness, which can involve a number of contributing factors, such as genes, environment, diet, lifestyle, brain chemicals, psychology and personality.
There are many things people can do to help in coping with depression. One of the best steps is to be aware of the cause of your condition and remain optimistic and evolve the most appropriate methods and strategies to help deal with it. The advice of a well trained counselor to evaluate the nature of depression of the patient is extremely valuable.
Family therapies and group therapies are excellent occasions for the patient to share with others his problems and get the support. Do not attempt self treatment or hope you'll get better. Serious and manic-depression appears to have a heredity factor. Genetic, hormonal, and chemical aspects that are activated by stress and disturbing life events have a strong influence on a person’s thoughts and moods. If the depression is serious, you always need to be evaluated by an MD, who will decide what is best for you in coping with condition.
If your illness is primarily chemical, psychological coping techniques may be looked into. Drugs may be useful if your illness has psychological causes. The best method however is always a combination of both. Exercises are an excellent method to keep oneself busy. Sedentary life patterns can be a major cause for this illness too. In fact there are a variety of exercises and relaxation techniques that are recommended to help a patient in coping with the condition.
The patient’s near and dear ones can be of a tremendous influence too. Care should be taken never to tell the person that his feelings are understood. They can be supportive and patient during these times. Make the person understand and feel that his loved ones are always with him during all times and definitely encourage a professional counseling of some sort if symptoms persist.
