Signs of Depression can vary from Culture to Culture
Depression can be considered a mental condition where a person experiences deep, unshakable sadness and diminished interest in nearly all activities. Depression is used to describe a state of temporary sadness, loneliness, or blues that everyone feels from time to time. Severe conditions can dramatically hinder a person’s ability to perform social functions, face day to day situations and at work.
Personal weakness was commonly seen as a sign of this condition. Recent studies and researches in this field have led psychiatrists, psychologists and doctors to view it as a real illness. People with major symptoms often have feelings of despair, hopelessness, and worthlessness, as well as suicidal tendencies.
At least 8 percent of adults in the United States show serious signs of this illness at some point during their lives, and estimates range as high as 17 percent. This condition is found world over and affects people regardless of age sex race or location. Not every sufferer shows symptoms. For some, the signs may be few and far between. Severity of symptoms varies with individuals, with regard to age, sex and even time.
Some of the general signs are anxiety, hopelessness, pessimism, lethargy, insomnia, overeating, or in some cases loss of appetite, suicidal tendencies, restlessness, irritability inappropriate social behavior, physical disorders etc. recent studies have even led researchers to consider excessive sleepiness as possible symptom.
This condition usually begins during a person’s 20s or 30s. The conditions may either manifest gradually over months or years or may erupt suddenly in a few weeks or days. A person who develops severe symptoms appears confused, frightened, unbalanced and may ultimately lead to a nervous breakdown.
Signs of the illness can also vary from culture to culture. In some cultures, people may not experience feelings of sadness, guilt or other associated symptoms but may complain of physical problems. In Mediterranean cultures, for example, sufferers may complain of headaches or nerves. In Asian cultures they may complain of weakness, fatigue, or imbalance.
