Hereditory Heart Disease

There are forms of heart disease that are hereditary and there are forms that are not hereditary. Speed with which the acquired disease develops can be related to the presence of risks factors. For example, patients who have ischemic coronary disease where the blood supply has decreased , rate at which this disease develops or progresses is influenced by many risks factors. The patient can control some of these risks factors and some cannot. If one has history of coronary disease in family or members of family have risk factors for the disease, like as high cholesterol or high blood pressure, there is a risk of coronary disease for that person.

The first-degree relatives i.e. father, mother, brother, sister with the disease the risk is more. If coronary disease is clustering in family, it may be due genetic problem and/or life style. Unhealthy habits like improper diet, no exercise and smoking are often learnt in the family. The disease is caused by various different factors and although you cannot choose your genes you can choose the life style. By following healthy lifestyle and taking any medication that helps, it is still possible to lower your risk even if your genes predispose you to the disease. In fact, some rare forms of heart disease are hereditary, such as IHSS and some forms of familial cardiomyopathys. Coronary disease is considered as multifactorial. If you have a family history you should be screened carefully.

Effect of genes on heart disease:

Our genes define our identity and they cannot be changed, however the effects of abnormal genes can often be limited by simple measures. Although genes increase risk of a heart attack, this can be minimized by healthy life style. However, there is a great deal still to be discovered about the genes that either predispose us to, or protect us from attacks.

Measures to minimize risk:

Many people die every year from avoidable coronary diseases. Each and every person should take important and simple steps to ensure that they have a healthy heart. It is recommended for regular exercise, a healthy diet including at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day, as well as avoiding fried foods, smoking and excessive drinking.
