Female menopause is actually the end of a very long process
Though men and women both experience this, female menopause brings far greater changes in both their physical and emotional well being. It generally lasts far longer than the male version and is more physically daunting.
It is actually the end of a very, very long process in which a woman's body stops making estrogen and progesterone. This lack of estrogen then causes a woman's menstrual cycle to become irregular. She is also likely to suffer from other physical conditions such as night sweats, hot flashes, urinary tract problems and vaginal dryness. Dry skin and hair may also occur.
It bring many emotional issues into a woman's life as well. Mood swings are not uncommon. Panic attacks and general anxiety also often play a part. While it isn't true that women are doomed to get depressed, it is fairly common, especially in women who have had previous episodes of depression and other nervous conditions. This is because there is a very strong biological link between hormones and emotions. And the link is biological, which means that women do not have a great deal of control over whether they will experience emotional difficulties.
There is also a strong genetic link between emotional conditions during female menopause, so it's a good idea for women to examine their mothers' experiences to have a better understanding of what it may be like for them as well. This genetic link does not mean that because a woman's mother had a difficult time that she will, but it is a strong indication of what she may go through.
There are many treatments available, so no woman should suffer unnecessarily. Several anti-depressants such as Prozac have been found to be very effective for either or both the physical and emotional conditions. Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT), though still somewhat controversial, is another excellent treatment. Some herbal remedies such as black cohosh and St. John's Wort can also be helpful to relieve some symptoms. However, before taking anything, a woman should see a physician to be sure she's getting the best, safest treatment available.
