Menopause and Weight Loss

Menopause and Weight Loss

While many women have to deal with menopause and weight gain, there are many others who must deal with weight loss. Though weight loss may not be as common as weight gain, it can be just as big a problem, if not more so.

Most of the time, when women experience weight loss, it is due to a depression or anxiety condition that is a part of their symptoms. When the two go together, it may also be because women are suffering from an improperly working thyroid gland which may cause a woman's appetite to be suppressed or gives her an almost manic energy level.

Weight loss may more seriously be a reflection of a poor self-image and a reaction to the fact of getting older. At times, this can become a form of anorexia and can be very dangerous to a woman's health. Proper nutrition is vital to menopausal women and is one of the best ways to aid in relieving symptoms. If a woman becomes obsessed with losing weight, she can get into serious medical problems. More than ever, during menopause women need to be sure their bodies get adequate vitamins and minerals, especially calcium.

If you're experiencing weight loss, you should see your physician for a thorough physical examination. If your weight loss are due to an accompanying depression, your doctor may prescribe anti-depressants to help you feel better and increase your appetite. You may also be placed on supplemental vitamins to help replenish any lostweight. Don't try, as many women do, to treat your symptoms yourself. See a doctor to be sure your body is getting all the nutrients it needs to function at its very best during this tumultuous time.
