Early Pregnancy Detection

There are some instances when early pregnancy detection is essential. One of the main reasons that a woman needs to have early detection is if she is to undergo any medical or surgical procedures.

Even something as simple as x-ray to examine a painful ankle can be dangerous if the woman requiring the x-ray is expecting. If there is the slightest possibility of expectancy then the x-ray staff must be told so that precautions can be taken to protect the baby. For this reason, if she needs an x-ray, a woman should make sure she knows the date her last period started!

If a woman takes medication that is harmful to a fetus, and her period is one day late, then she needs to take a pregnancy test immediately. Early detection in her case can mean her medication is changed without delay and that any possible harm to the baby averted.

If a woman is trying to conceive, then she should have her medication changed prior to expecting in readiness, but if the pregnancy happens without intent, then early detection can save a lot of worry and potential harm from the drugs passing into the placenta.

Women who smoke and drink higher amounts of alcohol than are safe for a healthy expectancy can also benefit from early detection. Many women who fit into these categories will immediately stop their cigarette and alcohol intake upon finding out they are expectant, and so the earlier they discover they are expecting the less potential harm can occur to the fetus.

One of the best advantages of early detection is with women who have had previous miscarriages. By identifying the expectancy very early, it is possible for her medical providers to monitor her carefully in the first important weeks and so be in a position to try and prevent a further miscarriage if this is possible.

A woman who is at high risk of miscarriage will take extra precautions if she knows she's expecting and not do anything that will put stress on the fetus until the expectancy is more established, and early detection makes this possible.
