When a root is fully formed it must be extracted. When impacted, this root lies very close to a nerve. If harmed during surgery, a patient may no longer have feeling in their chin after recovery. The younger the patient, the less likely that a surgeon will have to cut the root out as well.

Recovery from extractions also depends on how well a patient can follow instructions. All surgical sites require care. Oral surgeons recommend lightly swishing salt water around the wound for better healing recovery. There are also certain foods one should avoid as well as actions. You should not drink through a straw or smoke. All of these things could affect the recovery time for extraction site.

Extraction is a surgery many people experience. All surgeries require proper follow up care for a positive recovery. The recovery time for wisdom teeth extractions depends on many factors including age, and proper follow-up care.
